TIPS ON DRIVING YOUR MOVING TRUCK
Driving a U-Haul, Budget, Penske or any other box truck can be a bit challenging, especially if you're not used to driving larger vehicles. Here are some tips that can help make your experience driving a box truck safer and more comfortable:
Get familiar with the truck: Before you start driving the moving truck, take some time to get familiar with its features and dimensions. Check the mirrors and adjust them to get a good view of the surrounding area. Make sure you know how to use the brakes, accelerator, and steering wheel, and familiarize yourself with any other controls, such as the turn signals, windshield wipers, and lights.
Plan your route: Before you start driving, plan your route and be aware of any potential hazards or obstacles, such as low bridges or tight turns. Avoid narrow or winding roads, in Pittsburgh this is nearly impossible, but ultimately choose a route that allows you to drive at a safe and comfortable speed.
Check your blind spots: Big moving trucks have larger blind spots than cars, so be sure to check them carefully before changing lanes or turning. Look over your shoulder and use your mirrors to get a clear view of the surrounding area. As part of getting familiar with your moving truck, making sure your mirrors are comfortably positioned prior to departure, will really assist in the minimization of blind spots.
Brake early and cautiously: Box trucks are heavier than cars and require more time to slow down, so make sure you give yourself plenty of time to brake. Start braking early and apply the brakes slowly to avoid sudden stops or skids.
Use your signal lights: Always use your turn signals to let other drivers know your intentions. This is especially important when changing lanes or turning. These trucks tend to always have blinds spots as we mentioned before, so your signals are extremely important.
Keep a safe distance: Keep a safe following distance between your truck and other vehicles on the road. This will give you more time to react to any unexpected events and avoid collisions.
Take it slow: Moving trucks are not designed for speed, so take it slow and drive at a safe and comfortable speed. It would be a good idea to slow down your stuff is back there! Don't rush, and take breaks if you start feeling fatigued.
Remember that driving a box truck requires a little bit of extra caution and attention, but with practice and careful attention, you'll get the hang of it in no time. Or just book one of our local moving packages!
